Some parties have said that Brexit has opened up an opportunity for UK fishermen to take part in the conservation of the bluefin tuna fishery. According to the Express Co UK, conservationists have reported that there are hundreds of thousands of bluefin weighing more than 500 pounds in the waters off Cornwall and Kent. Interestingly, ICCAT has only allocated 50 M/T to the UK for catching this tuna in 2021.
Stuart Singleton-White, Head of Campaigns at Angling Trust, said Brexit has enabled the UK to lead the way in protecting the species and sustainable fishing. He said that leaving the bloc has provided a unique opportunity and that they can “maximize the benefit for the coastal communities.”
