Majestic Tuna Corporation Will Open Doors This Year

24 February 2025

The reopening of the Majestic Tuna Corporation, situated in the Malahang suburb of Lae in Papua New Guinea (PNG), will take place before the end of this year. This was confirmed by PNG Fisheries Minister at a Tuna Investor Consultation in Singapore last week. Wong thanked FCF Co Ltd. and Frabelle (PNG), owners of the cannery, for deciding to reopen it after a change in ownership structure and management, reported PNG news sites. The event also discussed a realignment of RD Tuna Canners, another major processor on the island, with the help of tuna companies such as Dongwon Industries, Tri-Marine International, and FCF Co. Ltd. More details about the realignment or the strategies were not revealed.

Majestic Tuna Corporation decided to shut down in June 2023 due to financial constraints and a shortfall in tuna supply. This caused a stir among its employees whose livelihoods depended on the cannery jobs. During the event, Wong also discussed how the rebate scheme for processors and the Vessel Day Scheme (VDS) for fishers have helped boost the island’s economy.
