19 February 2025

A 43-year-old crew member of the Mexican-flagged purse seiner ‘Nair II’ died in an accident on board on the fateful night of February 16. The deceased, David Alberto, was working when he hit his head, suffered severe injuries, and lost his life. Alberto’s body was taken to the Mazatlán port on Monday for a thorough examination and to be handed over to relatives later, reported Spanish news sites. More details about the sailor or the accident were not revealed.

‘Nair II’ is owned by Mazatlán-based fishing company Pesca Azteca, S.A. de C. V. The 70-meter-long boat has a 1,161 m3 fish hold capacity and operates in the IATTC convention area. Incidents of tuna crew members dying while working on board are rare. However, this recent accident sheds light on the risks faced by crew members working on fishing vessels.
