ETC2025 Will Explore Impact Of Tariffs And Protectionism Issues

12 February 2025

Péter Kovács

Since US President Donald Trump took office on January 20, he has been introducing additional import tariffs to protect the American economy. His “Make America Great Again” campaign aims to encourage people to buy more US-made products and keep out foreign items to reduce the US trade deficit.

Trump’s policies are bringing significant changes to the global tuna trade. How will it affect the EU tuna industry? Do they bring challenges or perhaps opportunities such as for Vietnam tuna traders?

Session I of the European Tuna Conference on May 5 in Barcelona will explore the impacts of trade protectionism on the global tuna supply chain. Will it lead to more fragmentation and encourage regional processing? Perhaps free trade deals and duty negotiations should be reconsidered.

Panelist Péter Kovács, Head of Unit DG Trade at the European Commission, will give DG Trade’s view of the future trade climate and what we can expect. Will that be more domestic production or will countries strike back with their own measures?

Kovács has led the Industry, Goods, Energy, Customs, and Origin unit for the DG Trade for more than seven years. The unit is responsible for the negotiation, implementation, and enforcement of the relevant provisions of trade agreements between the EU and its trading partners. It is the contact point for industry stakeholders on trade policy issues. Kovács brings experience from previous positions at the European Commission and worked at NATO and the Hungary Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
