Will Fisheries Inspectors Strike Affect Almadrabas?
The Spanish trade union Confederation of Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) has called fisheries inspectors to strike indefinitely starting March 3. This could affect the Almadrabas campaign that takes place in April and May every year. The inspectors first protested in June last year with their main demands being enhanced working conditions and better remuneration. A CCOO spokesperson said the union was forced to take this latest decision because of the passivity of the government, which had promised twice to take steps to resolve the conflict, but has not done so, reported Spanish news sites.
The CCOO also planned for a rally in front of the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) headquarters in Vigo ahead of the strike. Fisheries inspectors in Spain ensure that fishing activities are carried out sustainably and in compliance with the current regulations. This includes monitoring the unloading of vessels and the weighing of catches. In the case of Almadrabas, inspectors certify that fishing procedures are carried out according to EU regulations.
