The Sea Shepherd fisheries conservation society has so far collected USD 442,279.37 out of the $1,411,692.87 it needs for a bond on its flagship, which has been detained by court order at a Scottish port following a request by a Maltese company.
The Steve Irwin was detained on July 15 when Fish and Fish Ltd filed a civil lawsuit claiming damages for the bluefin tuna which Sea Shepherd says it ‘rescued’ from the company’s nets in June 2010. Sea Shepherd claims the fish was caught illegally after the season had closed, without an inspector onboard, or any paperwork documenting the legality of their catch.
The company said its operation was legal.
“Since our initial appeal just six days ago, those of you who love marine life have given us a record number of donations in this timeframe and we are deeply touched by your outpouring of support. As of Sunday, July 24, we have estimated donations at USD 442,279.37 – this is fantastic, but we are still far from our goal. We hope that those of you who have not donated yet may find a way to do so,†Sea Shepherd said.
The 174-foot ‘Steve Irwin’ was acquired by Sea Shepherd in 2006. It was named Steve Irwin, in honor of the late Australian conservationist, in 2007.
The ship has gone on over 30 voyages as part of fisheries protection campaigns.
The ship was about to head to the Faeroe Islands on an anti-whaling campaign when it was detained.
