The Seychelles Port Authority ( SPA ) is investing heavily in equipment to boost service delivery in Port Victoria, the main sea port in the Indian Ocean island state, with an aim to make it No. 1 in the region, an official said on Tuesday.
SPA has acquired two new tugboats and a conveyor belt to offer ships 24-hour service and off-load tuna in a more cost-effective and less time-consuming way.
Chief Executive Officer of SPA Andre Ciseau told Xinhua that the aim of the investment program is to position Port Victoria as the No. 1 sea port in the Indian ocean .
Victoria , which is the world top tuna fishing port and the leading sea port for cruise shipping in the Indian Ocean , is also the deepest port in the region.
However, it faces stiff competition, mainly in terms of cost, from other sea ports in the region.
Ciseau said Seychelles can capitalize on its strategic geographical location and the fact that the Indian Ocean rim is dotted with wealth-generating areas to position itself as a trade hub at the intersection of maritime routes.
