Tesco was slammed last night after it slashed petrol prices - for people buying cans of tuna.
The supermarket giant is cutting 15p per liter off pump prices for shoppers. But they have to spend GBP 50 in store.
And two of the purchases have to be a four-pack of Princes tuna in brine - and a 30-pack of Coca-Cola.
A 15p cut would take Tesco’s cheapest unleaded fuel to 114.9p per liter.
But AA president Edmund King said: “Drivers want to fill up with a gallon of petrol - not a gallon of Coke. I haven’t heard of a 15p cut yet. But they’re dictating what people eat and drink. I’d rather just see a straight reduction in petrol.â€
Tesco insisted the news would be “extremely welcome†for motorists.
UK chief executive Richard Brasher said: “It's the best fuel deal you’ll find anywhere in the UK.â€
Shoppers not wanting Coke or tuna can get 5p a liter off by spending GBP 50. Buying the tuna or Coca-Cola gets them another 5p off - as does the tuna.
