Greenpeace has filed a complaint against Princes UK on misleading tuna labeling with the United Kingdom Office of Fair Trading. The complaint states that “the labeling on Princes UK’s tinned tuna products breaches the Consumer Protection provisions of the 2008 Unfair Trading Regulations and is a criminal offence.”

The complaint could force Princes, the largest tuna brand in the UK by market share, to remove all its cans from the shelves, Greenpeace UK executive director John Sauven said.

On January 10th, Greenpeace launched its 2011 UK tuna league table. Speaking at the launch, Sauven said Princes misleads consumers with labels claiming that the group “is fully committed to fishing methods which protect the marine environment and marine life.”

“However, this labeling hides the fact that Princes catches the majority of its canned tuna with purse seiners using FADS (Fish Aggregation Devices) that lead to high bycatch species killed as a result.”
