According to CEO Brian Jeffriess of the Australian Southern Bluefin Tuna Industry Association the large number of southern bluefin tuna that had been spotted in the Great Australian Bight would offer relief for the local industry after a tough year of increased regulations and quota cuts.
While the last season helped to recover widespread tuna stock, 2011 is already looking to be a better year.
“The 2011 Australian tuna season promises to be the best since the late 1970s - with massive numbers of fish migrating into the catching areas in the Great Australian Bight,†he said.
“Despite bad weather, the aerial spotters are officially recording massive waves of fish from the western recruitment areas. Single areas of 400 to 800 tons are being reported, before the main season starts. Already, the only company to start fishing has caught hundreds of tons, and is towing the fish back to Port Lincoln to start the ranching year.â€
The massive influx of Southern Bluefin Tuna (SBT) puts to rest various scientific models that predicted that the fish would be near extinction at the present time.
