Ghana’s fisheries sector is to receive a major boost in the near future. Reports indicate that though the sector has huge potential, it has not been fully explored. In view of this, a Danish fish delegation is currently in the country to explore investment opportunities in the sector.

Some of the specific areas the delegation is expected to explore include outboard processing, sea food processing, tuna processing, and modern cold stores among others.

The Director of the Fisheries Commission, Samuel Quartey, who has met with the delegation, told Citi Business aqua culture, marine culture, fiber glass, feed production and tuna processing sectors are some of the many areas that need to be explored by both local and foreign investors. Indigenous methods of fishing also need to be modernized to bring them in line with modern fishing techniques.

“I say the canoe is the back bone of our fisheries because annually, we are looking at about 300,000 metric tons but their contribution in terms of production is about 2 to 3%”, he stated.
