Spain’s National Association for the Manufacturers of Canned Fish and Seafood (ANFACO) has recently exposed the results of a market survey which claims that “58% of southeast Asian can violate European law”.

The study was supposedly conducted by a consultancy company and ordered by the Association.

Atuna.com contacted an ANFACO representative, but it appears that the organization is not ready to give any comments yet. When asked about the consultancy company named CIALIA, the Association did not give any more information.

In addition, ANFACO did not comment on details about this survey, such as the number of samples, or the countries the canned fish originated from. The information out to the Spanish press brings very specific numbers in several faulty categories, such as “inappropriate texture” and “unfit taste”.

“We are still analyzing how to study this topic; our board of directors needs to take a position about it and then we can analyze how to inform it to the public”, stated ANFACO’s representative.

Atuna.com asked whether they would consider publishing the report in the future and even though ANFACO said it may do so, nothing is certain.

The only thing said for sure is that ANFACO does not believe that the recent polemic caused by the free trade agreement that Papua New Guinea signed with Europe should be related to this survey in any way. The Association stated that wasn’t the purpose of the survey, even though the Spanish press claimed that the results of it were sent to Brussels, to the European Commission.
