The rescue of 33 miners trapped deep underground in Chile for more than two months finalized successfully yesterday.
The men had been stuck in the gold and copper mine 2,000 feet underground since Aug. 5, when thousands of tons of rock and debris collapsed and sealed the exit.
The miners survived the first 17 days by eating one spoonful of tuna per person every two days. During those first 17 days, they were disconnected from the outside world and were thought to be dead. The tuna had been stored in an emergency shelter.
Rescue workers finally bored a small tunnel, the width of an orange, down to the space where the miners were trapped, and began delivering essentials.
