The First International Forum on tuna fishing in the Western Mediterranean commenced last Wednesday in Madrid, Spain, as contact point between the (tuna) fishing sector and representatives of the Administration and research titled “Regional Cooperation: Future of the Fishing Sector".
During the three-day forum, people in charge of the Administration, scientists, and representatives of the professional fishing sector in Western Mediterranean countries have debated on subjects related to the international cooperation in the fishing sector, among others. In addition, they will study the policy on the present management of fishing effort control or the professional vision of certain fisheries of common interest.
Participants in the debate are representatives from FAO, EU Commission, General Commission of Mediterranean Fishing (CGPM) and also from the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna (ICCAT). The objective of these sessions is to draw conclusions based on comparative analysis of the different regulations from Western Mediterranean countries, and to approve proposals for the improvement of scientific advice on the status of fishing resources and to initiate, in an immediate future, a plan to regulate congestion for certain fishery.
