Island Enterprises, a private Maldivian company that exports fish, said although the price of fish in the Thailand market is at the rate of US$700 to US$750 per M/T, the amount of fish purchased from Maldives fishermen is low.
“During June and July, fishing is quite poor. Even if fishing is to improve this year, it is expected that only at the end of the year fishing would be successful,†said a senior official of the Island Enterprises. “We receive only two tons of fish to buy per day,†he said.
Fishing has been poor in the most northern atolls, Male Atoll, and in southern regions of the Maldives due to bad weather.
A person from Haa Alifu atoll said fishing has been very poor in the atoll, but as the cost of dried fish is considerably good, they receive adequate amount of fish to make dry fish.
Another company that exports fish said there has been some time since fishing has been poor.
Price of fish in Thailand market also increased due to the fact that fishing has been poor in the world.
Meanwhile price of dried fish in Sri Lanka’s market has also doubled.
