Events which were expected to attract around 10,000 delegates to Bangkok have been cancelled following violent clashes between anti-government protestors and police.
The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) has had to close its central Bangkok office due to its proximity to the demonstration area, but staff have been working from outstations to assist event organisers and industry suppliers.
Hotels in the Ratchaprasong areas, including the Grand Hyatt Erawan, Holiday Inn and Intercontinental, have also been temporarily closed.
One of the cancelled events is the TUNA 2010 conference and exhibition, which was due to take place the Centara Grand and Bangkok Convention Centre from 20 to 22 May, and expected to attract 700 delegates.
Waraporn Sornprom, senior manager, TCEB, said they had been able to relocate some events to other Thai destinations like Pattaya (90 miles outside of Bangkok), while some events taking place in greater Bangkok were still going ahead. “The Thai government and related parties are keeping close contact with tourism operators who need help,†she said. “TCEB staff are also keeping in contact with our MICE suppliers and event organizers to ensure their operations run smoothly and should they need assistance on site. Those travelling to Pattaya or the outskirts of Bangkok should not be affected.â€

She added that TCEB is now working on recovery plan to repair the damage to Bangkok’s reputation as an events destination.
