The Legislative Yuan approved Tuesday Taiwan’s participation in the Antigua Convention of the Inter American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC), upgrading the country’s status from a cooperating fishing entity to a full member of the body, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced that same day.

This means that Taiwan will enjoy the same treatment as other IATTC member states and will retain the title “Chinese Taipei,” which will better ensure Taiwan’s deep-sea fishing rights in the eastern Pacific and will be of great help in Taiwan’s efforts to take part in more international activities, MOFA officials said.

Taiwan first joined the IATTC in 1973 as an observer and became a cooperating fishing entity under the “Chinese Taipei” name in 2003.

The IATTC, established by international convention in 1950, is responsible for the conservation and management of tuna and other species taken by tuna-fishing vessels in the eastern Pacific
