Maruha Nichiro Seafoods Inc. said Monday that its tuna farming operations have obtained Japanese Agricultural Standards (JAS) certification for food traceability, a first for any such operations in Japan.
The certification allows tuna farmed by the company to be sold with the JAS symbol at retailers that satisfy certain conditions.
The certification requires the company to publish data on farmed tuna, including where they came from originally and what they were fed. It covers the roughly 1,000 tons of bluefin tuna that the Maruha Nichiro Holdings Inc. (TSE:1334) unit produces annually in Kagoshima and Mie prefectures.
