The Palau Government says the tuna industry, if promoted domestically, can be another source of income for the country.

Palau is currently drafting a piece of legislation to promote domestic fishing ventures for the nation to obtain maximum benefits from its fish stocks.

The Marianas Variety reports the industry is mainly controlled by foreign companies.

Speaking on the possibility of promoting the tuna industry, President Johnson Toribiong says the measure will be a follow-up to a tuna summit held recently in Palau by the leaders of eight Pacific nations making up the Parties to the Nauru Agreement.

Mr. Toribiong says the government is also considering limiting fishing agreements with foreign companies.
