Japanese Quotas Speed Up Port Lincoln Tuna Catchff

Tuna boats have arrived back in Port Lincoln after only being at sea for a fortnight.

There are so many fish at sea that three-quarters of the quota has already been caught.

The season is expected to be finished six weeks earlier than normal.

President of the Tuna Boat Owners Association, Brian Jeffriess, says the reason there are so many tuna could be due to the Japanese quota cut.

“Japan, when its quota was 6000 tons, was actually catching 20,000 tons a year,” he says.

“Now that it’s 3000 tons, they’ll probably scale back to 4000 tons. That’s still over-catching, but certainly scaled back, and you would expect an incredible increase in the number of fish in the water because of that cutback.”
