15 January 2010 European Union

The European Commission’s services have not yet managed to come to agreement on the proposal for the EU’s position at the forthcoming Conference of Parties to CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Fauna and Flora), slated for 13-25 March in Doha. The item was once again deleted from the agenda of the Commission meeting, on 13 January. The discussions are still stumbling over the suggestion of banning trade in bluefin tuna, a measure Fisheries Commissioner Joe Borg says is not grounded in scientific findings (see Europolitics3890). French Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Bruno Le Maire commented, on 13 January, that he did not support a “ban on bluefin tuna fishing,” but simply a ban on its marketing outside the European Union.
