The Choshi Fishing Port is packed with landed albacore tuna on Monday.
The Choshi Fishing Port got the year off to a good start by landing 1,500 albacore tuna among its first catch of this season on Monday.
The port landed 223,739 tons of fish last year, winning the largest yearly catch in Japan for four consecutive years. This season’s opening ceremony was held at the fish market on Monday, with some 100 Choshi Fisheries Cooperative Association members and brokers attending. Masanobu Sakamoto, head of the association, called for cooperation to become the country’s largest landing port for the fifth straight year, while giving the highest priority to safety.
Albacore tuna is used to make a variety of sashimi called “bintoroâ€.
However, there is global concern about the species' population decline resulting from overfishing, raising the possibility of international restrictions on catching albacore tuna.
