In reaction by the Earth Island Institute on the story “How Dolphin Safe Is Tuna?†(published by FIS October 23, 2009 and covered by atuna.com) the dolphin protection organization says the article badly misses the mark.
Earth Island Institute (EII) established the Dolphin Safe program in 1990 to ensure tuna that carries a Dolphin Safe label is caught by methods that do not harm dolphins. According to EII, not only has dolphin mortality due to tuna fishing operations been reduced by 98%, but 90% of the world’s tuna market and the entire US market follow a uniform standard of no encirclement of dolphins during the entire fishing trip. It says the FIS reporter’s assessment that the Dolphin Safe label as “no more than a decoration icon†is laughably off base.
