New South Wales far south coast fishermen say they will be hit financially by the latest quota cuts.

The international body controlling southern blue fin tuna hauls has slashed the Australian catch by 25 per cent.

While most of Australia's blue fin comes from South Australia, East Coast fishermen rely upon the species to get them through the leaner months.

Bermagui Fishing co-op chairman, Rocky Lagana, says the cut comes at a time when good management practices are allowing fish numbers to increase.

“We don’t understand why it is a big large percentage of blue fin which has to be taken off our Total Allowable Catch,” he said.

“Fishermen rely on that blue fin quota to get them through the winter months. They now have to look at what's up and what they have to do in the future.”
