Two crew members on board the Yu Chun No.166 threatened the Taiwanese skipper, Shih Chin-hsing, with a knife while the ship was fishing off Southern Japan on Oct. 2. Shih and another Taiwanese crew member barricaded themselves inside a room while they requested to enter the nearby Japanese harbor of Chichijima.
A war of words consequently erupted about whether Japan refused entry and why. The Japanese authorities were reportedly reluctant to become involved in handling the dispute between the Indonesians and the Taiwanese, reports said.
The ship set course for Taiwan last week and was met by vessels from the Coast Guard Administration on Friday.
Prosecutors are reportedly preparing to board the ship, reports said. Most of the other Indonesian crew members did not help the two alleged mutineers, according to media reports.
Lawmakers pilloried the Coast Guard over its slow response to the emergency and about the time it needed to send ships to the skipper's aid.
Many Taiwanese fishing trawlers are manned by crews from Indonesia or China, and conflicts with Taiwanese skippers occur relatively often.
