According to local tuna producers, the typhoons Ketsana and Parma - which recently claimed about 600 lives – have not affected tuna canneries in the area.

The typhoon Ketsana hit Manila directly two weeks ago and the typhoon Parma is just about 100 km north of the city, striking some of the northern provinces very hard. However, the major processing centers for tuna are in the island of Mindanao, which has constant good weather.

Mr. Francisco Tiu-Laurel, CEO of Frabelle – tuna fishing company in the area – stated that some of the typhoons have affected fishing activities but only of fresh tuna for the local market in Manila: “Supply to tuna processors is ok, as most fish come from the Pacific Ocean”, he added.

Philippines authorities have announced that tuna producers there have donated a container-van full of fresh tuna products and other goods for the typhoon victims.
