30 July 2009 Peru

Written by Isabel Guerra

Tuna and tuna-like species fishing will be banned under the jurisdiction of Peru in the Eastern Pacific Ocean (EPO), from 1 August to 28 September 2009.

The measure was prepared by the Ministry of Production (Produce) under the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) resolution, which puts forth a conservation programme for yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna, and skipjack tuna.

According to the new norm, vessels will be authorised only one fishing trip of up to 30 days in length, during the specified period of prohibition, as long as they carry an on board observer per the International Dolphin Conservation Programme (AIDCP) Accord.
