There is no surplus tuna from this year's harvest although there was some surplus from the 2007 harvest.
Australian Southern Bluefin Tuna Association chief executive officer Brian Jeffriess said he could “absolutely assure†there was no surplus tuna from the last harvest and the surplus from 2007 was sold later in Japan.
Mr. Jeffriess said the recession in Japan and the strength of the Australian dollar had had a combined effect on the price, in the same way they had on all rural products.
“These are the normal fluctuations you have in all export industries,†he said.
Meanwhile the frozen southern bluefin tuna harvest off Port Lincoln will continue throughout July and August.
