Indonesia is exploring the possibility of joining the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) to expand the fishing ground of its fishermen, an official said.

“We are exploring the possibility of joining WCPFC to be able to expand our fishing ground in the Pacific,” Head of the Capture Fishery Research Center Achmad Poernomo said here on Friday.

Indonesia is currently members of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) and the Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT).

“By joining the two commissions, our capture area has expanded to the Indian Ocean,” he said.

In addition, Indonesian fishermen were no longer considered illegal while catching tuna in the ocean, he said.
