Most of the participants of the last Atuna poll believe that skipjack prices should be between US$1250-1400 per M/T. The question asked was: What would be the ideal long-term price for skipjack CFR Bangkok per M/T? And 35% of the readers chose that option.
Close to that number, 30% of the participants judge the best price for skipjack to be between US$ 1000-1250 per M/T. In addition, 27% consider the best long-term price to be over US$ 1400 per M/T.
The results can be considered a reflection of a general desire for better margins and a more consistent profit after 6 months of ups and downs on raw material prices.
Even though prices are now around US$ 1100 per M/T – with downward force - the long term analysis should consider the possible lower offer of raw material during the second semester of 2009 due fisheries closures in several parts the Pacific Ocean, and an increase in tuna consumption during the summer period in Europe and the USA.
Only 6% of the poll’s participants decided that the best price for skipjack on a long run would be below US$ 1000 CFR BKK per M/T.
