Fishing in Maldives, at present, is extremely poor and that MIFCO is able to get only an average of 50 tons of fish daily, MIFCO media coordinator Maumoon has informed Miadhu Daily.

According to Maumoon fish is only available in Huvadhoo atoll and that transporting the catch to its canary in Felivaru is also an added expense. He also revealed that amount of yellow fin tuna purchased has also declined to a record low.

He revealed that with the levels of poor fishing the company will not be able to cover its operating costs. He also said the company is making every effort to encourage fisher folks to go fishing but that poor fishing has caused the fishermen to restrict their fishing trips in an effort to cut down fuel expenses.

Fishing boat owners has informed Miadhu Daily that some of the fisher folks who took bank loans to build their boats are being sued by the banks for failure to meet payment schedules, a direct result of extremely poor fishing and that they are unwilling to do anything that may cause further losses. They argue such action by banks only worsens the situation.
