Thai Union Earns Environmental Three-Star Certification ff

Thai Union Frozen Products announced yesterday that it is Thailand’s first shrimp producer to earn the Aquaculture Certification Council's three-star certification, ensuring that its hatcheries, farms and processing plants meet the environmental, social and food-safety standards set by the Global Aquaculture Alliance. The standards are known as the Best Aquaculture Practices.

”Today’s consumers are not just interested in a product’s safety and quality, but also the environmental and social impacts of its production process from raw materials to finished goods,” says Rittirong Boonmechote, managing director of Thai Union’s shrimp group.

”Therefore, we have actively and continually examined all aspects of its operations and we have developed a comprehensive set of social, labor and environmental policies,” he adds. “We have also been working closely with our subsidiary hatchery and alliance and contract farms to help them continually improve environmental and social performance.”

In the first nine months of 2008, Thai Union’s shrimp group reported a 29 percent sales increase compared to 2007, says Boonmechote. Shrimp represents 19 percent of the group's total sales.

Thailand is the world’s largest shrimp exporter.
