New Year’s Ahi Tuna Could Hit $30 A Poundff

2 January 2009 United States
In Hawaii an estimated 100,000 pounds of ahi tuna was expected to arrive Wednesday at the fish auction in time for New Year’s Eve celebrations. As long as the fish come in, prices are expected to be about the same as last year, with the best red and fatty fish selling for about $30 a pound.

”I’m just hoping weather conditions don’t turn bad,” said Brooks Takenaka, assistant general manager at the United Fishing Agency. “If we have a bunch, maybe the prices will come down. But it’s still going to be high.”

Even with the down economy, Takenaka expects people were still going to buy fish for good luck for New Year’s.
