In Malta the haul of bluefin tuna, a species considered to be endangered due to over-fishing by the WWF and other global associations, increased by 51 per cent in wholesale value over the same period despite an increase of just 14.8 per cent in the amount caught.
With landings of 142,092 kilograms with a €1.21 million wholesale value in the first 3 quarters of 2008, blue-fin tuna is the second-most valuable haul by Maltese fishermen.
