With the full 150-ton quota caught as of Wednesday, the P.E.I. bluefin tuna season came to a close.
Fishermen voluntarily closed down the season for much of August and September, reopening it Oct. 6. The weather did disrupt some fishing days, but the full quota was caught, and, as hoped, the fish were bigger and fetched better prices per pound.
“I think really worked out,†Ed Frenette, executive director of the P.E.I.
Fishermen’s Association told CBC News Thursday.
“Prices were much better in October, anywhere from $11 to $16.75 a pound.
And the fish were a good size, I understand too: a lot of them dressing out at 800 and 900 pounds.â€
Fishermen were also restricted this year to one fish per boat per day.
Frenette said a full assessment will be done over the coming months to determine if the same measures should be taken again next year.
