The Belgian customs authorities intercepted a container holding 500 kilos of cocaine stashed between cartons of tuna.

The container was coming from Ecuador and carried a full load of tuna destined to a Dutch supermarket chain.

The Belgian authorities seized the cocaine and destroyed it. They then informed the Dutch HARC-team in the Netherlands and intentionally let the container follow its course to Rotterdam, hoping to find out who the drugs were intended for.

Once the container arrived in Holland it was transported to the supermarket chain’s storage facilities where the employees discovered the unusual cartons among the tuna load and immediately contacted the police.

However, besides the supermarket, no other party claimed the lot. The 500 kilos cocaine have a street value of approximately 25 million Euro.

The investigation performed by the Dutch authorities discarded any connection between the smuggled cocaine and the supermarket chain or storage facility. “Both were acting in good faith; the container with Ecuadorian tuna was corruptly used to smuggle the drugs.”

There was no information released by the police about the processor or the actual importer of the tuna in the Netherlands. The only 2 supermarkets in the Netherlands directly importing containers of canned tuna are Lidl and Aldi.
