Ecuador Wants Closer Cooperation With Mexicoff

28 April 2003 Ecuador

Following the call by the Mexican Tuna industry on the local government to stop the imports of low priced canned tuna from Ecuador, the newly appointed ambassador of Ecuador in Mexico, Francisco Herrera, recently assured that Ecuador wants to intensify its relation with Mexico. Herrera said that he will work in his new position to boost the commerce and the investment between this Andean nation and the Aztec country.

Herrera, journalist with more than twenty years experience in local mass media, informed the local Mexican press that the "high-priority objective" is to obtain a bilateral agreement of Ecuador-Mexico commerce.  "There is great interest to continue and to maintain conversations until a bilateral agreement of commerce is obtained", he said referring to the fact that Ecuador sells canned tuna, petroleum, tires and wood, among other products to Mexico, whereas the Aztec country maintains in Ecuador investments in telecommunications and highways, among others.

He emphasized that the minister of Foreign trade, Ivonne Baki, is "very enthusiastic" about the idea "to open new rounds of conversation to come to point where both countries can publicly sign an agreement".
