25 July 2008 The Netherlands

Vietnam’s share of tuna products in the United States (US) are on a continued rising trend.

During the first quarter of 2008, the US imported 7.213 M/T of tuna from Vietnam. This represented a 14% increase equaling an extra 872 M/T compared to the 6.341 M/T entered during the same period last year.

The leading items within the Vietnamese tuna product range to the US market were canned tuna and fresh whole round tuna.

The quantity of canned tuna went up by 21% and landed at 5.790 M/T or 709.559 cartons (48x170g), while fresh whole round tuna increased by 3% from 924 M/T to 952 M/T that time.

Furthermore, the volume of frozen pre-cooked tuna jumped very considerably during the first 3 months of this year, going from an insignificant 4 M/T to a more noticeable 64 M/T.

Despite the overall increase of Vietnamese tuna product to the US, the remaining tuna items descended; product such as frozen fillets, pouched and frozen whole round. Their volumes declined quite considerably: frozen fillets went down by 29% and pouched tuna by a sharp 39%, while the quantities of frozen whole round disappeared completely.

When looking at figures on the latest 5 years in the chart here above,  the US imports  of Vietnamese tuna has kept on rising and seems that it will continue to be on a growing trend also in 2008, provided that there will be enough tuna raw material available to the Vietnamese tuna sector.
