Conservative MP Praises New EU Dolphin Safe Policyff

14 April 2003 United Kingdom

According to U.K. press fish lovers will soon have a guarantee that the tuna they buy is dolphin friendly thanks to a new tracking device and verification system that ensures tuna is labeled correctly.

Mr. Bashir Khanbhai, Conservative Euro MP for the East of England, has welcomed the new rules passed at the end of March by the European Parliament. (atuna: the EU passed the IATTC dolphin safe definition as basis for their dolphin-safe policy).

The new system should ensure that rogue fishermen and dealers using environmentally unfriendly methods will no longer be able to pass off their fish as being dolphin friendly.

Khanbhai said: "Consumers want to enjoy tuna in the knowledge that dolphins have not been harmed. This system should put an end to rogue fishing and protect the dolphin population."
