Portuguese Import Market Shows Strong Growthff

22 July 2008 The Netherlands

Although Portugal has its own canning industry, it still imported 878.637 cartons (48x185g) of canned tuna in 2007, a 15% growth compared to the previous year.

Neighbor country Spain is by far the dominating supplier to Portugal, and responsible for 83% of the total canned tuna import, with 727.995 cartons last year.

Ghana - previously the third most important exporter to Portugal, lost a significant part of its volume. This gap was filled by a strong increase in supplies from France and the Philippines, with supplies of 28.345 and 24.606 cartons respectively.

Canned tuna in oil represented 92% of the Portuguese purchase of tuna products in 2007. This European country had 1% share of the entire European imports of canned tuna last year.
