UK Import Of Frozen Raw Loins Shoots Up ff

15 July 2008 The Netherlands

United Kingdom’s (UK) imports of frozen raw loins over doubled in 2007 – from 1.187 M/T to 2.910 M/T. Last year’s boost represented the end of a decreasing trend that has been around since 2005.

The leading supplier to the UK last year was Sri Lanka, with 937 M/T, while previous trade statistics had not shown any exports from this country for frozen raw loins in 2006. This extra ordinary explosion in supply indicates that these Sri Lankan loins were possibly duty cleared under another statistics number in the past.

Fiji was the second provider in terms of volume with 398 M/T – 34% more. Additionally, UK imported a visible amount of the tuna product from Iceland, Germany and Netherlands.

The UK had a 16% share of the entire EU import of frozen raw loins in 2007. This increase set the UK in fourth position as main destination for this tuna product, after Spain, France and Portugal. Actually, frozen raw tuna loins are an item which is mostly imported from Asia by these European countries, and then re-processed and re-packed before it is delivered to UK distributors.
