Not only did the Philippines increase its export volume of canned tuna in brine to the European Union (EU) by 38% last year, but also managed to boost up prices by 15%.

Philippines sold its canned tuna in brine to the EU for US$ 22,90 per carton (48x185g) in 2007, while the price level in 2006 was US$ 19,96, the export shipments reached a total quantity of 2.718.007 units.

Philippines unit prices of canned tuna in oil were also growing last year. The value of the Asian country’s canned tuna in oil jumped by 12% from US$ 19,79 to US$ 22,26. The quantity, however, equaled 2.803.390 cases which was 8% less compared to the year before.

Generally, Philippines’ prices of canned tuna in brine and in oil were at a similar level between 2001 and 2006. However, in 2007, the price for the product packed in oil was more attractive than that of tuna in brine.
