Due to a higher production by the Calvo plant in El Salvador, 35% more frozen pre-cooked tuna loins from El Salvador were imported in the European Union (EU), reaching 14.753 M/T in 2007. This was the biggest volume supplied from the Central American country in the past five years, and moreover all the volume went to only one importer: Grupo Calvo in Spain.
Imports of loins from El Salvador started in 2003, with only 527 M/T. However, within just one year’s period, the volume sharply increased by more than sixteen times reaching 8.634 M/T; and since then has remained above the 10 thousand M/T.
In 2007, the EU imported a total of 90.897 M/T of frozen pre-cooked tuna loins, just only 0,15% less than in 2006. Ecuador was the largest exporter with 26.330 M/T, followed by El Salvador.
