The Netherlands
Canned tuna importers in the United States (US) paid 12% more for their products this last Jan-Mar than they did in 2007. The average price reached US$ 23,84 per carton (48x170g), a level this market has not seen for a long time.
All the major suppliers raised their prices. Thailand’s canned tuna went up by 19%, from US $ 21,67 to US $ 25,79 per unit. The Philippines’ figures were lower in prices, with US$ 22,62 per carton, but higher in growth, 29% up from last year. Vietnamese cost equaled US$ 22,79, a 15% raise, and Indonesian prices jumped by 4% and reached the highest value, with US$ 26,38 per unit.
Poor catches and extremely high diesel oil prices are the direct factors causing the entire inflated situation in the tuna business environment.
