Italian Vets Alert On CO Smoked Fresh Tuna From Maldives ff

The EU rapid alert system in its week 49 report mentions the most recent problems in relation to the quality of tuna.

Italy has alerted the finding of exceeding levels of histamine in chilled vacuum packed tuna fillets (Thunnus Albacares) from Sri Lanka.  Several loins were tested and the results ranged between 26.5 and 1636 mg/kg – ppm).

The notification was made on the basis of food poisoning and the distribution of this lot has been restricted to the country of origin. The product is to be withdrawn from the market.

Italy was also the notifying country for yet another alert: that of carbon monoxide treatment (64.3 mg/kg – ppm) of vacuum packed fresh tuna fillets from the Maldives.

This anomaly was detected during a border control. And although the consignment was released, the product will be withdrawn from the market.
