The Philippines supplies of tuna products to the United States (US) started off very well this Year.
The Philippines delivered 12.799 M/T to the US tuna market during the 1st quarter this year, which represented a 25% raise compared to the same period in 2007, when exports reached 10.278 M/T. This can be considered as a very good year’s start for the Asian country given that the export rate to the US has been dropping systematically since 2005.
Although the volume of canned tuna showed a 22% growth in last year’s figures, with 9.934 M/T or 1.217.402 cartons (48x170g), today, the leading player for the Philippines’ early outbreak was pouched tuna. The Philippines has triplicated its delivery to the US, reaching 1.155 M/T.
Even the fact that all other forms of processed tuna by the Philippines had their volumes decreased at the beginning of 2008, it still didn’t spoil the good tendency of the country’s exports to the US market.
The January to March 2008 statistics show that the Philippines is currently the second largest tuna exporter to the US with a 16% share of the entire US tuna import, staying behind only Thailand – the largest canned tuna exporter to the US.
