Importer of tuna and squid, Dosui Co., Ltd. is developing Bluefin farming activities in Mexico. At present the fattening of bluefin mainly takes place in the Mediterranean and Australia, because of the favorable conditions for its culture; Dosui also began to develop this activity in the Republic of Malta in 2000. In Malta the tuna stays, during four months, in fattening cages of about 50 meters of diameter, located in waters outside of the island, until they reach a weight of 200 kg and are ready to harvest. Dosui annually handles 1,500 tons of these tunas.
The farm that Dosui installed in 2002 in Mexico is located in the peninsula of Baja California. The bluefin tuna produced there is smaller than the one raised in Malta, and has an average of about 70/80 kg weight.
The smaller size fish in Mexico represents easer capture and transport to the farm, and it also requires less cost in feeding. Dosui expects to export approximately 300 tons of tuna this year from Mexico. Their bluefin product will be for sale in Japan in supermarkets and for the sushi business.
