Court To Hear Chinese Plea To Close Japanese Tuna Factoryff

The High Court in Suva, Fiji is likely to hear a petition to wind up the multi-million dollar fish processing factory Tosa Bussan (Fiji) Ltd on May 7, 2008.

The petition was filed by Tai Fi Shipping Agencies Ltd. The company is an agent for Taiwanese and Chinese fishing vessels.

Tosa Bussan, the Japanese company which is located at the Rokobili Estate in Walu Bay, Suva, was set up soon after the May 2000 coup, exports tuna for the huge sashimi market in Japan.

In 2006, it opened a new office and a bigger fish processing factory worth about $10 million beside its factory in Walu Bay.

It is also an award winning company, having won the ‘New Exporter of the Year’ for achieving remarkable results on its $4 million investment after starting operations in 2000. In 2001, it was awarded the Fiji Islands Trade and Investment Bureau's special commendation award for commendable performance in exporting.

The company also sponsors the Namosi rugby ream in the Fiji Rugby Union competition.
