US Fresh And Frozen Tuna Performs Better Than Cannedff

7 April 2008 The Netherlands

The United States (US) imported 25.798 M/T of fresh tuna during 2007, a 2% increase in volume compared to the previous year.  Therefore, US imports of this item have been quite stable during the past 6 years.

The leading tuna item was undoubtedly Yellowfin, with a 70% of the market share, equivalent to 17.985 M/T. This volume represented a slight 1% compared to the previous year and which was thanks to a larger supply from the main exporters: Trinidad & Tobago, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Bigeye then followed, far behind, with 5.617 M/T imported in 2007 and which corresponded to 22% of the total import volume. Most of the Bigeye to the US was supplied by the Marshall Islands, Trinidad & Tobago, Panama, Vietnam and Ecuador.

Furthermore, while imports of Bluefin and Albacore vaguely increased last year, those Skipjack and Southern Bluefin slightly declined.

Imports of fresh tuna equaled 10% of the total US tuna imports.

All in all, the US has shown a steady demand for fresh tuna in the past 6 years.
