Malaysian Exports To The USA Slowly Recoveringff

22 January 2008 The Netherlands

Malaysian exports to the United States (US) seem to be on a very slow climbing trend.

Most of the 2006 exports to the US took place during the first 9 months of the year; 974 tons between Jan-Sept versus the 1073 total tons exported during the full 2006.

Recently published statistics show that the first 3 quarters of 2007 predict a slight more positive result for that year. Malaysia delivered 13% more tuna products to the US during those same 9 months of 2007 compared to previous year. Exports also continued to moderately rise during the subsequent two months. The growth was from 974 M/T to 1.097 M/T representing an increase from 0,45% to 0,53% of the total US tuna market share.

This modest rise was thanks to the a larger export volume of fresh yellowfin tuna, as well as of frozen fillets.

Though the trend seems to finally be picking up slowly, the peak reached in 2004 of 1696 tons (0,6% of the US tuna market contribution) still looks quite far away.
